Allure of the Seas, while still a relatively newer ship, at just more than 13 years old, has undergone a series of refurbishments and dry docks, but nothing majorly expansive. The ship left the shipyard on its maiden voyage in October 2010, headed toward its new home in Florida, where it would sail around the Caribbean. A christening ceremony was held on Nov. 28, 2010, led by the ship’s fictional godmother, Princess Fiona from the Shrek franchise. Built for an original cost of $1.2 billion, Allure of the Seas was built at the STX Europe Turku Shipyard in Finland (though, at the time of order, the shipyard had not yet been acquired by STX Europe). The ship was ordered in February 2006 and construction began in February 2008.

Other no-fee options include the Boardwalk Dog House, which has a menu of hot dog selections, such as a classic dog, chicken and pineapple sausage, smoked Bavarian bratwurst and Sicilian pork sausage. Top any of those with sauerkraut, onions and a slew of other toppings, and pair it with a side of coleslaw or potato salad. Royal Caribbean has cut its daily cabin service back to once per day; you can choose from either morning or night. Since the Cruise Compass daily schedule is now available in the mobile app, the line has also stopped printing it for everyone.

Mexico's sprawling urban areas show you the lively side of this rich country. Additionally, the ship’s Studio B show, Ice Games, was one of my favorite ice skating shows to date. I have a hard time understanding the plot of most ice skating shows, but Ice Games was easy to follow. The show revolved around a Monopoly game in which the cast members (or guests!) rolled a die that would transport the set to an area of Allure of the Seas. Personally, having these features missing does not make Allure of the Seas any less desirable to me.

Heading aft, the Hall of Odds leads to the art gallery and Casino Royale, the ship's main casino space. If nightlife is what you seek, you're sure to enjoy Entertainment Place on Deck 4. Allure of the Seas is the only “original” Oasis Class cruise ship left, meaning she has not received her amplification and therefore does not have several features and activities found on other ships in the class. That said, a cruise on Allure of the Seas is still worth considering. There’s much to love about this ship, from the classic Royal Caribbean entertainment and venues, to the relatively still-modern staterooms and suites. There are also frequent fun-filled audience participation game shows and trivia contests perfect for the whole family.
Decks and Cabins
Passengers booked in more expensive cabins receive individual mini-bottles of the line's branded shower gel, lotion, shampoo and conditioner. The desk/vanity was outfitted with a series of North American 110-volt outlets, a chair, hair dryer, an obsolete alarm clock with an iPhone/iPod charging station and a minifridge. And, finally, I couldn't help but notice an empty storefront along the Boardwalk, windows covered with paper. The venue was tentatively scheduled to be removed during the next refurbishment, but it looks like it has already been shut down. Sabor Taqueria, which Royal Caribbean introduced on select ships in 2015 as Sabor Modern Mexican, is one of my favorite restaurants at sea. It was so popular that it eventually was added to Oasis Class vessels.
Allure of the Seas quality and service is top-notch across all restaurants. Standouts include Chops Grille steakhouse, a six-course tasting menu at 150 Central Park, and Sabor’s Mexican favorites. The weekend calls for your best beach day at the award-winning island Perfect Day at CocoCay. Or crank up the party at Hideaway Beach, the ultimate adults-only beachfront paradise. Get your fix of non-stop thrills like the tallest waterslide in North America. And refuel over foodie finds from signature wings to all-you-can eat island favorites.
With a capacity of nearly 7,000 guests, it’s important to have plenty of pool space on Allure of the Seas, and you’ll find several areas to keep cool on warm Caribbean days. One of the best entertainment features on Allure of the Seas is the full-length Broadway musical, Mamma Mia. This 2.5 hour production is included in your cruise fare and is a highlight of the cruise for many passengers.
Littles have big-time fun in the Babies and Tots programs at Adventure Ocean®. There's a more lax attitude about time in Mexico so factor in an extra half-hour to an hour when planning out your Mexico cruise itineraries. Cruise the Yucatan Peninsula, which separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico, and discover Mexico's Caribbean side. Stop in Cozumel island, off the east coast of Yucatan, and enjoy the bright-blue waters and untouched paradise appeal.
Shorts are discouraged in the main dining room for dinner, but you'll see people in them anyway. Allure of the Seas is breathtaking, both in scale and ambition, yet it never feels overwhelming. Deck 14 is all about the kids in Adventure Ocean, and, at the back of the ship, right up on Deck 15, you have the Sports Area, complete with FlowRider surf simulators, a zipline, mini-golf, Ping-Pong and basketball courts. The ambience and atmosphere in each area are so distinct, it's as if there are seven different ships on one.
To save costs, we realize we don't need an ocean view balcony, so we'll choose another option. Any problems we had incurred prior to sailing with conflicting information from the travel agents regarding group planning. As someone who cruises frequently, it was refreshing to see a range of dining options on Allure of the Seas not found as commonly on other Royal Caribbean ships. I preferred my meals at Samba Grill and Sabor on Allure of the Seas much more than my dining experience at Wonderland (which can be found on other Oasis Class ships).
Everyone receives a salad and vegetable fried rice, as well as edamame to share. Then they choose from several protein or vegetarian options, such as chicken breast, beef tenderloin, tiger shrimp and sea scallops with lobster. Dessert selections consist of crispy sesame balls, chocolate lava cake, mochi and green tea ice cream. If you're on a strict vacation budget or don't want to pay extra for dining, you can have a decent free meal in the main dining room. The space is divided into three sections — American Icon Grill, The Grande Restaurant and Silk — spread across decks 3, 4 and 5. With 18 bars and 22 places to grab food and snacks, Allure of the Seas has an astounding number of venues to eat and drink.
Options include specialty wine and Champagne bars, pool bars, bars with nautical and Latin themes, and even a bar that levitates. I was super sad to learn that, when the ship undergoes its refurbishment in 2025, the saloon will be replaced with Playmakers sports bar, complete with the venue's standard pub grub menu. That means the only remaining ship with Sabor will be Harmony of the Seas.
Ocean view staterooms feature large, circular windows near the bed, which can be blocked off with thick curtains if you desire (though why wouldn’t you want to take in the sea views from bed?). The next scheduled dry dock and upgrades were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shipyard closures, as well as the overall state of cruising during that time period. Allure of the Seas’ displacement (a ship’s weight based on the amount of water its hull displaces), though, is equal to Oasis of the Seas’ — approximately 100,000 metric tons. To give you an idea of what that means, that’s only a little bit lighter than the weight of an aircraft carrier. There’s a sophisticated jazz club on Deck 4 and a lively Latin band performing at Boleros on Deck 5. Seventies, ’80s, and ’90s cover bands are also performing nightly, as is a folk guitarist in the British pub and a sing-along pianist at Schooner Bar.
